Calculating a fibre cement panel facade

Fibre cement panels (Silbonit, Swisspearl etc.) are mounted on an aluminium subframe with visible rivets or hidden bonding. Joints of 8–10 mm are left between panels, and cutting around windows produces more waste than a plain wall — a 10–15% reserve is usually allowed.

The calculator works out panels by format, L and T profiles, brackets with thermal pads, rivets, mineral wool, wind membrane and ventilation gap profiles. Rivet spacing is typically ~400–600 mm along the profile — the exact count depends on panel format and wind load design.

Fibre cement panel system in practice

Large-format panels (Silbonit, Swisspearl, Equitone) are fitted on an aluminium subframe: wall brackets (~1.8–2.2 pcs/m² depending on wind load and panel weight), vertical T- and L-profiles under panel joints and mid-panel. Panels are fixed with facade rivets — typically 10–14 rivets per panel at ≤ 600 mm spacing; each panel gets one fixed point, all other holes are oversized by 2–3 mm to allow thermal movement.

Joints between panels are 8–10 mm, open or with EPDM tape on the profile. Behind the panels: a windproof membrane (UV-stable if the joints are open) and a 30–40 mm ventilation cavity. Typical cutting waste is 10–15%, since facade layouts rarely match the panel module.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fibre cement rainscreen cost?

A full kit (panels, aluminium subframe, wool, membrane, rivets) is about €80–120/m² in materials; installation adds €40–60/m². In Latvia budget €120–180/m² in total.

Why is a ventilation cavity needed?

The 30–40 mm cavity lets air circulate and carries moisture out of the insulation. Without it the wool gets damp and loses thermal resistance, and efflorescence appears on the panels.

Can panels be screwed to timber battens?

Yes — smaller projects use colour-matched facade screws on impregnated timber battens. For large and tall facades an aluminium subframe with rivets is still recommended — it accommodates thermal movement and lasts longer.

How heavy is a fibre cement facade?

An 8 mm panel weighs about 15 kg/m² — factor this into bracket spacing and anchor choice. Lightweight and hollow masonry needs chemical or specialist anchors.
