For an open-joint timber facade (planken) a 5–8 mm gap is left between boards, so the working width of a board is larger than its actual width. Lining boards join in a groove. Batten spacing is 400–600 mm, and a ventilation gap behind the cladding is essential, closed top and bottom with a perforated profile.

Planken boards (typically 20 × 140 mm larch or thermowood) are installed with an 8–10 mm gap between boards — timber moves, and the gap lets it breathe. With a 140 mm board and 10 mm gap, 1 m² takes ~6.7 linear metres. Tongue-and-groove lining needs no gap — count by cover width. For horizontal cladding use vertical battens at 400–600 mm centres.
Example: a 6 × 3 m wall (18 m²) in 20 × 140 planken needs ~121 lm of boards (~133 lm with a 10% reserve), ~30 m of battens, hidden clips (~20 pcs/m²) or stainless screws ×2 per batten crossing. Untreated larch and thermowood grey out within 1–2 years in the Latvian climate — to keep the tone you need UV oil in 2 coats (~1 l per 8–10 m² per coat) refreshed every 3–5 years.
Siberian larch — durable and affordable (from ~€25/m²); thermowood — more stable and uniform but pricier (€35–55/m²); deep-impregnated spruce/pine — the budget option, needs regular re-coating.

Larch and thermowood in a ventilated system last 30–50 years. The critical part is not the wood but the details: plinth clearance ≥ 300 mm from grade, ventilation at bottom/top and protected end grain.
