Markup and margin are not the same: markup is calculated from cost, margin from the selling price. If a material costs €100 and you sell at €130, the markup is 30% but the margin is 23%. This difference often costs builders money when “30% profit” turns out noticeably smaller.
From cost and a desired markup or margin the calculator derives the selling price and profit in euros — useful when pricing labour, material supply or a whole project. Remember to include transport, downtime and tool wear in the cost, not just materials.
If cost is €100 and selling price is €130, profit is €30. Markup is 30% of cost, while margin is about 23.1% of selling price. The calculator works both ways and shows the euro difference.
Cost must include more than direct materials and paid hours: transport, tools, warranty risk, administration and non-billable time all matter. Otherwise an apparently healthy markup may produce little real profit.
Markup % = profit ÷ cost × 100.
Margin % = profit ÷ selling price × 100.
