The base decides how long paving lasts: a footpath needs 15–20 cm of compacted gravel, a driveway 30–40 cm compacted in layers. Above the gravel goes a 3–5 cm sand bedding layer, with geotextile underneath to keep layers from mixing. Add ~5% to the pavers for edge cutting.
The calculator converts the area into cubic metres of gravel and sand with a compaction allowance, counts pavers, kerbs and the concrete to set them, plus geotextile in rolls. Remember a fall of ~2 cm/m away from the building — water must drain, not pool.
Paver area is based on the finished zone with an allowance for edge cuts. Much of the material is often below the surface: geotextile, load-bearing aggregate, bedding, kerbs and concrete. The calculator converts layer thickness into cubic metres and tonnes.
Order volume must allow for compaction. A pedestrian path and a vehicle area need different base build-ups, also influenced by soil and drainage conditions.
